Bad Weather Came To The Neighborhood

Just got our power back on after it went out about 10:25 p.m. last night, as a vicious thunderstorm blew through northern Virginia (Inside NOVA).

Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency for Virginia, saying Friday's storm created the largest non-hurricane power outage in state history. Nearly 1 million customers in Virginia are without power today following Friday's storms.

The violent thunderstorm -- called a derecho -- killed two people in the Springfield area, including a 90-year-old woman in her bed, Fairfax County police said. Statewide, the storm's death toll so far is six people, all killed by falling trees, according to McDonnell's office.

A 27-year-old Burke man died when a tree fell on his car while he was driving in the area of Old Keene Mill Road and Bauer Drive just before 11 p.m. Friday, police said in a news release.

Police said Khiet Nguyen was driving his 1998 Mercury west on Old Keene Mill Road when a tree fell on his car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around the same time, in the 8100 block of Carr Street, a tree fell on a house killing a 90-year-old woman as she was lying in bed, police said.

Another resident of the house called 911, but could not reach the woman.
Police are still working to reach the woman’s next of kin and have not yet released her name.

Detailed information about storm damages in the Prince William County area wasn't available Saturday morning, but county officials said the storm toppled many trees in the area, leaving people without power, cell service and cable.

Hundreds of thousands remain without power in Northern Virginia, with temperatures today expected to once again top 100 degrees.

I opened the front door of MIM Headquarters last night and thought I'd walked back in time to Hurricane Allen. The storm didn't last that long, but a bunch of leaves and small branches are down in our area.

So, I'm cooling down the HQ since the power is on, and will be at the pool for the rest of the day to fight the heat!
