(CNSNews):
Leiter "remained on the ski slopes after the Christmas Day airline bombing attempt," the New York Daily News reported on Thursday. It looks unlikely that Leiter, Janet Incompitano or anyone else will be fired as a result of this, according to "That One" today (AP).
Two U.S. officials told the newspaper that Leiter did not return to work until several
days after Christmas. "People have been grumbling that he didn't let a little terrorism interrupt his vacation,” one of the sources told the newspaper.
...According to its Web site, the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) has two core missions, which it describes as follows: "The first is to serve as the primary organization in the U.S. government for analysis and integration of all terrorism intelligence. In this role Mr. Leiter reports to Dennis C. Blair, the Director of National Intelligence. The second mission is to conduct strategic operational planning for counterterrorism activities integrating all elements of U.S. national power. In this role he reports to President Obama."
Leiter was sworn in as NCTC director on June 12, 2008, after serving as acting director since November 2007.
In a recent interview with National Public Radio, Leiter said the United States is “not going to stop every attack. Americans have to very much understand that it is impossible to stop every terrorist event."
President Barack Obama suggested Thursday he would not fire anyone for the attempted Christmas airline attack, saying it appears the security lapses that led to the near-disaster were not the fault of a single individual or institution. "Ultimately the buck stops with me," said the commander in chief. And you failed! But your pink slip is coming in 2012!
He declared anew that the government had the information to prevent the botched attack but failed to piece it together. He announced a range of changes designed to fix that, including wider and quicker distribution of intelligence reports, stronger analysis of them and new terror watch list rules.
But, added Obama, "When the system fails, it is my responsibility."
