WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says he will end 'don't ask, don't tell' military policy.SFGate also notes further, that...
Yahoo News:...On Friday, however, Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs, responding on the transition team's Web site to a Michigan resident who asked if the new administration planned to get rid of the policy, said:
"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes.' "
He acknowledged to a cheering crowd that some policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.
"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,'" Obama said to a standing ovation from the crowd of about 3,000 at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group.
"We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve the country," Obama said. "We should be celebrating their willingness to step forward and show such courage ... especially when we are fighting two wars."
Is any thought given to what this might do to recruitment and morale? Of course not! It's just the usual bowing at the altar of political correctness by liberal Democrats, many of whom actively loathe the military.
Likewise, Obama does not consider that most in the military oppose repealing the ban (58 percent in a 2008 Military Times poll). One in ten have said they would leave if the ban was repealed. The Center for Military Readiness estimated that would mean a loss of 228,600 people, an amount slightly larger than the number of active duty U.S. Marines.
Along the same lines, a group called The Flag and General Officers for the Military Project asked retired officers to sign a letter to Obama opposing the repeal of DADT. By March of this year, 1,050 retired flag and general officers responded with handwritten signatures. Part of their letter read:
Our past experience as military leaders leads us to be greatly concerned about the impact of repeal [of the law] on morale, discipline, unit cohesion, and overall military readiness. We believe that imposing this burden on our men and women in uniform would undermine recruiting and retention, impact leadership at all levels, have adverse effects on the willingness of parents who lend their sons and daughters to military service, and eventually break the All-Volunteer Force.
So why are these retired officers and current military members being ignored by both the liberal Congress and their Commander in Chief?
Our military is charged with the important duty of protecting this nation. They should not be burdened further with the stress of becoming guinea pigs for liberal social experiments.

Obama also called on Congress to repeal the Defense Of Marriage Act, which limits how state, local and federal bodies can recognize partnerships and determine benefits. He also called for a law to extend benefits to domestic partners.
