Dr. Bernstein was in the Bay Area recently and visited a Larkspur cafe for breakfast. During her meal, she saw a man approach a group of "well-preserved, well-heeled, white seniors" and overheard him exclaim that Connecticut Senator (and the Democrat's 2000 vice presidential candidate) Joe Lieberman was "Jewish—as Jewish as you can get."
Bernstein, who wrote she is also "Jewish as you can get," confronted the individual, who immediately went "into a hateful tirade about how 'you people now want to bomb Iran!' and 'you people have ruined this country!'"
"When I informed him in a quiet voice that I had no desire to bomb Iran ....he grew louder and more aggressive, telling me "I hate you people." This was followed by the classic defense of all racists, i.e., he informed me that 'Some of my best friends are Jewish.' He also raised his voice and began wagging his finger in my face."
Did the good liberal Marinites in the cafe condemn their friend for his racist tirade? Guess again! Instead, they defended their friend's free speech, as an older woman in the group exclaimed "We shouldn't be subject to the policing of what we say!"
"Has anti-Semitism become acceptable in certain parts of Marin County? Is racism equally acceptable? Or did I just run into a bunch of bad apples in what is otherwise a good bunch?"
I’m sorry Ms. Bernstein had to endure this garbage in supposedly tolerant Marin County. Unfortunately from my experiences in observing and counter protesting the so-called anti-war Left in Marin County, it is more than just a few bad apples. Anti-Semitism is like a plague these days among the Left, and it is too often ignored by the liberal media. It ranges from code words like "Zionist" or "neocon" to placards attacking the state of Israel and the Jewish people.
In Mill Valley's 2004 Memorial Day parade, as a supposed "anti-war" group was allowed to march in the parade, leaflets were distributed saying "Jews are responsible for 9/11." This past March, in a San Rafael anti-war rally, signs appeared saying "End U.S. Aid to Israel, as well as equating Israel, America and Britain as the "Axis of Evil." The same can be said of similar protests in San Francisco, as well as other parts of the Bay Area.
It isn't just limited to these protesters and many in their leadership. Jimmy Carter, without a doubt the worst President of the United States, attacks Israel in his latest book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid." In an L.A. Times piece, Carter also attacked the "Israel Lobby."
"...for the last 30 years, I have witnessed and experienced the severe restraints on any free and balanced discussion of the facts. This reluctance to criticize any policies of the Israeli government is because of the extraordinary lobbying efforts of the American-Israel Political Action Committee and the absence of any significant contrary voices.”
This term is echoed by Paul Craig Roberts, in a review of Carter's tome at antiwar.com:
"In Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, Jimmy Carter takes the risk of speaking truth to propaganda. Predictably, the Israel Lobby and its shills ranging from the 'conservative' National Review to 'liberal' media and commentators have attempted to banish Carter by labeling him an 'anti-Semite.'"
I don't agree with Senator Joseph Lieberman on almost any domestic issue. However, I believe he is a true patriot, because he is willing to stand up to the Democrat party and reject their policy of appeasement, cut, run and surrender. He is taking a tough stand on the Islamofascist state of Iran, even encouraging military action. Why? It's common sense. Iran is the source of funding for the insurgency in Iraq as well as terrorism against Israel. Because of his courageous stand, he is attacked and vilified by his fellow liberals.
Liberals always love to lecture and rally against racism. Ironically, in their disagreement with Joe Lieberman on foreign policy, they are the ones attacking the man's race and religion. Likewise, they also attack the Jewish people for all the conflict in the Middle East, as well as American foreign policy.
Liberals, you've become what you claim to denounce.
