Heartfelt prayers and well wishes to the victims and their families today, as well as the entire Virginia Tech community.

Some at VTech are critical of the press coverage of today's tragedy. Riehl World View asks, "Is The Media Making It Worse?"

Before today, the worst mass shooting on a campus happened on August 1, 1966 at the University of Texas in Austin. On that day, Charles Whitman killed 13 and wounded 31. He had already murdered his mother and wife earlier that morning as they slept.

News 8 Austin has footage and recollections from that day, as last year was the 40th anniversary of the Tower shootings. The observation deck was reopened in the late 1990's; it had been closed in the early 1970's due to suicide jumpers. I moved from Austin a couple of years before the deck was reopened, but went up one day to one of the highest floors you could access for views as well as the stairway leading to the observation deck. It was eerie standing there, as that was the spot where Whitman's first victims at the Tower were killed.
